Background

Silverwater Women’s Correctional Centre and Dillwynia Correctional Centre were previously inspected by the ICS between August and October 2017 as part of a thematic inspection focusing on the treatment and conditions of Women on Remand (PDF, 7.0 MB) across correctional centres in NSW.


Where we inspected

Silverwater Women’s Correctional Centre is a maximum-security custodial centre which accommodates both sentenced and unsentenced women. It is the main reception centre for women in the Greater Sydney region.

Dillwynia Correctional Centre is a maximum-security custodial centre which accommodates sentenced and unsentenced women. It is located in Windsor.


Recommendations

The Inspector has made 36 recommendations in the report. These include systemic and facility specific improvements in:

  • Custodial conditions
  • Treatment, care and wellbeing of women
  • Rehabilitation of women in custody
  • Resources and systems, including staffing management.
