Inspector of Custodial Services

The Invisibility of Correctional Officer Work

Background

A prison is a high risk environment that would deter many prospective employees.

Correctional Officers, on behalf of the community, manage an inmate population that requires constant assistance, services and interventions. Inmates can be manipulative and dangerous.

The purpose of this report is to document the largely unrecognised work and achievements of people who work in custodial settings and to suggest how they might be acknowledged in the future.

Recommendations

The Inspector recommends that the parliament of NSW consider passing a motion to recognise correctional officers upon the annual Corrective Services Remembrance Day.

Report

The Invisibility of Correctional Officer Work Report was tabled in parliament and published in May 2014.
