Cooma Correctional Centre

Background

Cooma Correctional Centre was first inspected in 2015 as part of our report Prison Greens: The clothing and bedding of inmates in NSW. We must inspect each correctional facility at least once every five years. This inspection addressed all areas of the operation of the centre.

Where we inspected

We inspected the Cooma Correctional Centre. a medium security facility that can accommodate 175 people. A separate minimum security area, known as Area 2, is located approximately 500 metres away from the main gaol with accommodation for up to 50 minimum security inmates.

Recommendations

The Inspector makes 22 recommendations. These include systemic and facility specific improvements in:

  • Emergency management plans
  • Conditions and treatment of inmates
  • Programs, education and training
  • The provision of and access to health services
  • Family contact

The Cooma Correctional Centre Report was tabled in parliament and published in November 2020.
