Parklea Correctional Centre
Background
This is the second time we have inspected Parklea Correctional Centre (Parklea CC). The first occasion was for a themed inspection related to growing inmate numbers and crowding in the NSW correctional system. This inspection focused solely on Parklea CC.
Since our last inspection there have been considerable changes at Parklea CC, including a new minimum security area for sentenced minimum security men outside the secure perimeter of the original centre.
Where we inspected
Parklea CC is a large facility located in Parklea that holds male remand and sentenced inmates and has maximum and minimum security areas. The centre is privately operated by MTC-Broadspectrum on behalf of Corrective Services NSW. We inspected Parklea CC in November/ December 2020.
Recommendations
We made 40 recommendations. These include systemic and facility specific improvements in:
- conditions and treatment of inmates
- staffing and custodial support and procedures
- access to health and services for inmates
- custodial infrastructure
