Inspector of Custodial Services

Mary Wade Correctional Centre

Background

Women on remand have specific needs that differ from both men and sentenced women.

The Mary Wade Correctional Centre was established in 2017 as a maximum security custodial centre for women on remand only. As a standalone centre for this purpose, it is unique in NSW. This was our first inspection of the centre.

Where we inspected

We inspected the Mary Wade Correctional Centre, a stand-alone remand facility for women in metropolitan Sydney. The centre accommodates up to 94 women who have been charged with an offence but are unconvicted.

Recommendations

The Inspector makes 22 recommendations. These include systemic and facility specific improvements in:

  • Conditions and treatment of inmates
  • Programs, education and employment
  • The provision of and access to health services
  • Access to legal representatives
  • Family contact

Report

The Mary Wade Correctional Centre Report was tabled in parliament and published in October 2020.
